Nominator's project description

Professor Schulz is well-known for his work on the impact of oxidative stress and matrix metalloproteinases (so-called MMPs) in the heart and vasculature. In collaboration with his colleagues he discovered that MMPs have intracellular actions that cause contractile dysfunction in ischemic heart disease, such as heart attack, and in heart failure. His research aims at revealing the pathological and physiological roles of intracellular MMP-2. In Germany, he will work on effective new therapies for heart diseases, particularly to reduce pathological heart remodeling following a heart attack or preventing the heart damaging side-effects of cancer chemotherapy.
